The story of Jose Alfredo Jimenez as told by Miguel Aceves Mejia in the magazine El Mariachi Suena.
|
It was the year 1946 or 48. These six songs were hits, it was during the jukebox era, these were in all of Mexico, everywhere, and they would play my records- well, a lot. I became very, buy very famous; that's when I discovered Jose Alfredo. Los Tariacuris (the trio), invited me to the grand opening of a small bar, over in Santa Maria la Rivera, and we went. It was about four or five in the morning and I said to them: "Hey, there's nothing to eat here, did any of you bring anything?" "No, no. The grand opening is almost finished and from here we'll go, we'll take you to a place where we like to eat… and we'll have supper…and everything…" There I had the luck of discovering the greatest composer of Mexico. They took me there, we ate supper with pleasure, we were talking happy and content and everything. Well, we paid the bill, we stood up, we were getting ready to leave and the waiter that served us told me: "Listen Mister Aceves Mejia, I admire you greatly, I really like how you sing. You know I just finished arriving from my land, Guanajuato, and well I had to work here out of necessity… but I'm a composer, I have songs…" We made arrangements to meet later, I had a program with Mariachi Vargas at five thirty in the afternoon. About three or four days afterward we met - he showed up with a little book under his arm. "Here I come so that you can listen to my songs…" "Do you play the guitar?" "No, I don't play anything." he told me. After that I called Ruben Fuentes and I told him: "Listen Rubencito, help me accompany this young man…he says he has songs…" "Let's see, what are you going to sing?" asked Ruben. "Well, it's just a little song." "Good, what is it? A waltz or what?" "No, well, it goes tun-tata, tun-tata." "In which key, tell me? "No, well… I don't know the key, I don't know music." Then he started to sing… Me canse de rogarle Me canse de decirle Que yo sin ella De pena muero…And he continued to sing… he sang Ella, Tu Recuerdo Y Yo, Serenata Huasteca, El Jinete- those were the first four songs, this was in 1956. No! And then he sang Cuatro Caminos, and a bunch of other songs. We took him to Mariano (Rivera), and we asked him to sing for us again. In about one or two months, Jose Alfredo was famous. Imagine! They gave him one hundred thousand pesos to start with. In those days that was a lot of money that he earned… back then it was unheard of. That's what happened. He liked to drink and chase women and all those things… he went "crazy"… for a person that never had and now had everything… you can go crazy. But, without a doubt I had the luck of discovering the greatest composer of Mexico, and besides, he did it without knowing one note of music… because Agustin Lara at least played the piano, but Agustin (Lara) and Jose Alfredo, are the greatest composers from Mexico.
